2004 110 high hurdles Olympic gold medalist, Liu Xiang, announced his retirement from track and field on Tuesday, April 14. According to Sun Xiaochen, Xiang has been battling an achilles injury since 2008 and has not been able to recover fully. Xiang did his best to push through the pain, despite the injury's symptoms, yet caused the injury to develop more seriously. His choice to retire from the hurdling world was not easy for him, stating, "It's a well-considered decision but a hard one to make. I've tried all my best to recover from the injury over the past two years since the 2012 London Olympics, dreaming that I could start over again. But my foot denied my attempts over and over again, that I realized I couldn't withstand the high intensity for training and racing. I hate my foot as much as I love my track and my hurdles." Liu Xiang will definitely be missed by his teammates, coaches, and fans.

I remember watching this on tv. I think China was doing well that year. Its sad that such a talented hurdler is out of it.
